Samaná News – April 4, 2025

Samaná continues to gain momentum as a dynamic hub for sustainable tourism, cruise activity, and international connectivity. From restoration of heritage sites, record-breaking tourist arrivals, and zero-plastic efforts to new air links and major tourism deals, the region is strengthening its position on the global map. Here’s a look at the most relevant developments from Samaná and across the Dominican Republic in recent weeks.

Hotel occupancy in Samaná nears 95% during peak season!

Javier Lara Reinhold, president of the Samaná Tourism Cluster (CTS), reported that hotel occupancy in the province reached nearly 95% during the high season ending with Semana Santa. “They show phenomenal performance,” he said, noting growth across boutique hotels, large resorts, and short-term rentals. He expects strong demand to continue through 2025 – despite seasonal changes. Reinhold added that both port terminals in the region are under construction and considered national priorities. “For the next 20 years, I’m convinced this growth will not only continue – but accelerate,” he said.

Canada leads tourist arrivals to Samaná with 89.7%

Canada is the top source market for tourism in Samaná, accounting for 89.7% of arrivals, according to Jacqueline Mora, technical vice minister at the Ministry of Tourism. Portugal and the U.S. follow with 6.9% and 2.3%, respectively. Mora noted that despite having only 2,562 hotel rooms – just 3.5% of the national total – Samaná offers a wide variety of attractions. Cruise tourism is also expanding steadily. “In this regard, real estate tourism is a key segment, characterized by those who invest in properties in Samaná, whether for personal use or for long-term rentals,” she added.

Tourism Ministry signs 31 deals to boost investment in DR

The Ministry of Tourism (Mitur) signed 31 agreements with companies from Canada, the U.S., and Latin America to increase investment in the Dominican Republic’s tourism sector. Key deals include one with Expedia, highlighting destinations like Santo Domingo and Samaná, and others with Despegar, Hopper, and Trasant to expand travel packages. Minister David Collado announced these at the Dominican Republic Trade Show in Miami, which hosted over 1,600 business meetings. He projects the deals could attract over 500,000 new tourists and generate $1.3 billion in hotel investments. New seasonal routes from Air Canada and Travel Brands will also support this growth, alongside participation from hotel groups like Four Seasons, Westin, and Punta Bergantín.

Cruise arrivals in Dominican Republic to hit record in April

Jean Luis Rodríguez, director of the Dominican Port Authority (Apordom), announced that 74 cruise ships will arrive in the country in April – the highest monthly figure to date. Most will dock in Puerto Plata, but other ports including La Romana, Cap Cana, and Samaná will also receive ships like Mein Schiff 2, AIDA Bella, and Carnival Horizon. “This growth reflects the trust of major cruise lines in the Dominican Republic,” Rodríguez said. He noted that improved port infrastructure has been key to the increase. Each visitor is estimated to spend between $80 and $120, generating millions for local communities.

DR Ambassador meets Air Transat CEO over expansion

Dominican ambassador to Canada, José Blanco, met with Air Transat CEO Annick Guérard in Montreal to explore future route expansion to the Dominican Republic. The meeting covered plans to increase connectivity from Canadian cities to destinations like Punta Cana, Samaná, Puerto Plata, and La Romana. Air Transat currently operates flights from Montreal, Toronto, Vancouver, Halifax, and Calgary. In 2025, the airline will add 15,500 seats through new seasonal routes, including direct service to Samaná. “Strategic partnerships like this strengthen our tourism sector and deepen our ties with Canada,” said Blanco.

Cultural heritage sites in Samaná set for restoration

Minister of Culture Roberto Ángel Salcedo met with local authorities in Sánchez, Samaná, to discuss restoring key historical landmarks. The meeting at Rufino Calcaño Hall included provincial governor Teodora Mullix Geraldino, deputy Cecilio García, and mayor Ynocencio de Jesús. Sites under review include Victorian houses, the Lourdes chapel, and the old Sánchez dock. Afterward, officials toured the area to assess building conditions. “This initiative reflects our commitment to preserving the cultural identity of Samaná,” said Salcedo. Renovation efforts are expected to begin later this year.

Las Galeras leads zero-plastic project

The district of Las Galeras in Samaná has launched the “Galeras Cero Plástico” project, uniting residents, businesses, and public institutions to combat plastic pollution. Since June 2024, the initiative has recycled nearly two tons of plastic through a program run by the local government and Parley for the Oceans. “From Las Galeras to your feet” is the slogan used, as recycled material is turned into sneakers. The effort receives support from Japan’s JICA agency, ADEJA, and local education campaigns promoting recycling at over 20 collection points.
