The Verdant Cascade

Located among the serene landscape of the Dominican Republic’s Samana Peninsula lays a site that has enormous potential for the creation of a remote and sustainable farm, but more than that, it is a site that has the potential of fostering an extremely biodiverse ecosystem. The Verdant Cascade proposes more than just an off-the-grid sustainable farm, rather this design seeks to imagine the creation of a sanctuary of the unique ecosystem that exists within the Dominican Republic. Rather than plowing the site flat to make the program fit the site, this design allows for the program to work harmoniously with the site, saving the existing topography and vegetation wherever possible, and using low evasive construction techniques in their construction. As for the additional vegetation proposed, this concept proposes planting the endangered mahogany species native to the Dominican Republic, and the creation of biodiverse ponds that would help promote the safety of other endangered native Dominican Republic Species of Flora and Fauna. The functionality of the farm has been designed to help foster the growth of the community, hosting a series of classes the community in sustainable farming and construction techniques to help foster community knowledge, as well as growing drought-resistant and long-shelf-life crops to help the community during any droughts.
